There was a fantastic turn-out for the litter pick on Sat 11th Feb. Around 30 people from all parts of the village, adults and children, got stuck in clearing the amazing amount of rubbish that has been deposited in our hedgerows and verges since the last clear-up a year ago. I won’t go into the more unsavoury things found, but there were around 10 empty wine bottles spread out in the hedgerow in different places, too many cans to count, along with plastic gloves, plastic drinks bottles, and other general litter. This is the worst it has been in my experience of doing litter picks over the years, which is really sad. As we all know, apart from looking very unsightly the litter is dangerous to wildlife and to the environment in general. The photo on the left shows just a small collection of the bags of rubbish collected! Thank you to everyone involved in the litter pick. I don’t think that there is much point in putting a note about not littering in this magazine, as I am sure the you are not responsible, but it has been suggested that we put some “take your litter home” type signs up on existing poles at the worst locations, such as the passing place near the A4, and I will look into that via the Parish Council. I have a real problem trying to understand the mentality of the people who think it is acceptable to toss an empty wine bottle into the hedgerow, and yet we found 10 of them!
