Historical receipts and invoices

Old receipts and invoices can give us a fascinating insight into the businesses that existed in the past. They are very important in that they often don’t survive as they are seen as quite mundane items. It is interesting to note that cash flow may have been a problem for the various shops as the invoices are in many cases for 6 months worth of goods. They are dated either Midsummer, for the first half of the year, or Christmas, for second.

Below are some examples that were kept in the archives on Manor Farm, Calstone. This haul of treasure is not in the Wiltshire and Swindon Local History Centre in Chippenham.

Wadworth Brewery Invoice Dec 1900 – for 2 dozen ale and 1 1/2 dozen lemonade -bottles I assume.
Invoice for purchase of vermin killer and other items from Strawson Chemist, High Street, Calne
Invoice from M. A Maslen Confectioner, Bread and Biscuit Baker, Church Street, Calne. Christmas 1900 for 6 months worth of cakes.
Selfridges Invoice for supply of 199 lbs of Calstone rabbits. December 1919
Invoice from Quemerford Mills, Calne for animal feed and for receiving wheat from Mr Maundrell. April 1900
Invoice from John Gingell, Wood Dealer, Sheep rack, hurdle and flake maker for supply of sheep hurdles & cages. May 1900
Invoice from J. H. Cole, Draper and Outfitter, High Street, Calne for supply of cloth, mending and cleaning of various clothes. Christmas 1900.
Invoice from Dr to Wilkins and Son 28th November 1900 for the provision of nails and staples. Judging by the invoice header Wilkins and Son provided a wide variety of goods – from Steam cheese makers for fireproof safes.
Invoice from S Ferris, Watch and Clock maker, Church Street Calne for the repair of watches and broaches during 1900. Dated Dec 1900.
Invoice from Stephen Beazley, Wood Street, Calne, Ladies and Gents Fashionable boot and shoe makers. For the repair of shoes and boots during 1899. Dated midsummer 1899
Invoice from Herbert Blackford, Stone mason and builder, Shelburne Road, Calne. For repairs to cottages (36 hours work for £1 4s 8d ) May 1900

Invoice from F Telling and Son, Saddler of High Street Calne. March 1901 for the provision and repair of various items.
Great Western Railway Receipt April 25 1900
An order dated November 1919 from Harrods to the Maundrells for 100 rabbits every week to be delivered on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
Invoice from Harris’ factory in Calne for the supply of 11 pigs from Mr Maundrell – dated April 1900.
Invoice from W Cleverly, Shoeing and Jobbing Smith, for £1 to repair a fence in a field. Work done on April 11th and invoiced at Christmas 1899.
Invoice from William Grey, Thatcher 1896. For thatching various farm buildings and sheds – totalling £6 15/-
Invoice from Edward Maundrell, The Foundry, Calne dated Sept 1900 for the supply / repair of various goods. Items include a new false botton for kitchen range, screws. parts for a hay wagon.
Invoice from F W Bowsher, baker, grocer and provision merchant for goods received in 1900. Items include bread, butter, cake, cheese and Church magazines.
Invoice dated Christmas 1900 from J F Bristow of Calstone Mill for corn and meal
Invoice from John W Edwards, Spray’s Mill, Calstone (dated March 20th 1900), for 6 “best” mops. The invoice also shows a photo of “Springdown” Tea Gardens which Mr Edwards is said to be the proprietor. I have not seen a reference to this anywhere else and assume that it must have been located at, or near Spray’s Mill. It boasts “every accommodation for partied, boating, swings and “The Cascade”

One year carriage licence for £1 1/- paid by Mr Joseph Maundrell 10th Jan 1900.
Certificate of exemption from duty for a farm dog (one used solely for tending sheep or cattle). Dated 18th Feb 1901
